I have twenty years experience working on computers. A friend stopped over before she left for her vacation and asked me if i could go through everything in her computer do to she was having some problems with it i told that i would. I did my normal cleaning on the inside of the computer since it had been a long time since it was dun. There was a few out dated things so i up graded everything through Microsoft problem solved then i went through all the fills cleaned out all the bad ones and so on. When i was dun with the computer it worked like a brand new one. My friend returned home from her vacation and she was real happy with her computer again soon after that she had to call Magic Jack up to get her phone hooked back up since my friend was not home for so long Magic Jack decided to shut off her phone service. My friend came over and told me that i had to come over to her house to see what magic jack did to her computer when i got there they had a half a dozen test running at the same time I asked her what was going on and she told me that the person she was talking to got a hold of Microsoft because her computer was infected with viruses so i shut down everything that they had running on her computer and i got it back up and running again and i came back home and 5 minutes later my friend was back over at my place telling me that they put a block on her computer so she could not use it plus she was using my cell phone since her phone was not working and she had my cell phone with her and when my phone rang i answered it and it was the person from Magic Jack and he told me that she could not do that and i told him that i was the one that did it and that the did not have rite to put a block on her computer he told me that they did not do that and that it was Microsoft that put the block on her computer and that i would have to call Microsoft up and talk to them by that time my temper was boiling and i told him to call Microsoft and have them *** the block and he told me that he could not do that i told him that i was giving him 2 hours to get back in touch with Microsoft and have them fix what ever they did to her computer and if it was not fixed that they would be hearing from my Attorney. I walked back over to my friends house and her Magic Jack had a big window up on her monitor stating that her computer either got hacked or some one put a virus in her computer so i ran everything through her computer like i normally do to check for viruses and everything and one of the scans i ran found 63 viruses and all that came from Magic Jack and my friend did not use her computer until she had to call Magic Jack up to get her phone hooked back. Well needles to say my friend no longer has magic Jack for her phone service she now has a cell phone.

Magic Jack Needs a New Business Model

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I liked my Magic Jack for 4 months. Then it died. I had to spend 3 hours on live chat before I could get them to agree that the fault was with their device, not my computer or router. Magic Jack has FREE one year service but guess what? Your FREE replacement Magic Jack costs you $15. What a bunch of baloney! The $15 is not as bad as the 4 days of live chat. That device must cost them less than $2. Why would they pay their Live Chat people to spend 3 hours with me to determine that I need a replacement. And, by the time I get my replacement, I will have been without a phone for 10 days. Magic Jack needs a new business manager.

MAGIC JACK customer service off shore and sucks to boot

Have been a good customer for at least 7 years, even though the sound quality with MJ was never very good, always experienced a lot of static and cutting out - which they could never fix. I primarily got it for calling out of the country so it served it's purpose as it was cheap enough (prices go up every year though) when I got it. However, recently MJ choose to change my account to "automatic payments deducted" which I never ever do, and so when I paid my bill in October, my bank statement showed two payments for the year going to MJ. I called my bank to stop one of the payments immediately. I then called MJ to ask what happened and the customer service rep took the "automatic deduction payment plan" off my account. (*I NEVER AUTHORIZE AUTOMATIC PAYMENTS EVER). I thought everything was then ok but - I got an email a couple days later from MJ Collections Dept., stating my account was "red flagged" due to my having questioned and stopped one of the payments. To rectify this, I called MJ and was directed to "Collections". "Yes", (speaking to the Collection Dept.), "I did call my bank to stop one of the payments as I had never authorized MJ to automatically deduct from my bank account - not ever - so there were TWO payments deducted for the one year owing, thanks to MJ automatically deducting from my bank account after I had already paid my bill (on time)." The "supervisor" in the Collections Dept. (a woman) kept insisting I did authorize automatic bill pay because MJ had sent me an earlier email in the week telling me that they would automatically deduct my payments and I had had a chance at that time to call MJ to change my billing options if I had a problem with automatic deductions. She said I did not respond to the MJ email they sent out, so they automatically deducted my bill. I told her I did not see an email from MJ that said this and even still I never signed up for automatic deductions to my account. She then said I should have called MJ and not my bank regarding the two transactions. I told her it was on my bank statement so I DID call the bank to stop one of the payments. That I had called MJ after calling the bank regarding the two annual payments to MJ. The supervisor kept interrupting my attempts to tell her my side of the story and why I had necessarily cancelled one of the two payments for the upcoming year. Because I only wanted to pay my bill one time, not TWICE. She would not listen (I guess to be hired for a collections department you have to have your "rude on" and have an attitude) and when I asked to speak to someone else - who would listen - she said she was THE supervisor (*hence, blocking any attempts on my part to resolve the issue with someone else) and then hung up on me. I called MJ back, got transferred AGAIN to Collections and got a male who also seemed abrupt and had an attitude who told me that I DID have automatic bill pay (I explained I did not) and he too started being insistent. I explained that I had been a MJ customer for years and had always paid my bill on time and had never subscribed to automatic bill pay - but because he would not acquiesce to anything I had to say or to even listen, I then decided to cancel my subscription to MJ altogether. I did tell him that good customer service is everything to me and that while MJ might have been good once (*even with bad static and poor reception - most of the time), that I was now cancelling my account. It is bad enough that most customer service is now relegated to "off shore", and that the English spoken is obviously not their first language and it is often hard to understand the representative and to communicate. Then to add insult to injury *and poor reception besides that, to be switched to automatic deducted payments - *without my consent - and then being rude and blocking my attempts to work out any differences with the Collections Department (when it was not my fault I was charged twice for the annual payments) it's just too much. I hadn't considered cancelling MJ when I first called. It was not until the Collections Department was so rudely insistent that they were right and wouldn't listen to anything I had to say and continually talking through my attempts at reconciling my account, but like I said, good customer service is everything to me. So goodbye Magic Jack!!!! *and I hope the CEOs read my reviews and take notice. You will lose more money not treating people right. Your MJ product isn't all that it is cracked up to be anyway, with all the static and poor reception and poor customer service. I am sure I am not the only one. There are other competitors out there, I'd do your research before deciding on MJ. Thank you for letting me tell you about my MJ experience.

Did chat with employee. Have not had same for a year and still getting messages from phone number. Solved that problem then asked to have number deleted, don't even use land line. Sent me an email to confirm number deletion then they replied stating wrong email associated with account. That's because the chat rep had me puy in a fake one to get my original out of system. Cant anyone review the incident number. Then they put on my account my land line number under a mobil phone. Tried to get deleted completely with no results. Said it had to stay in system in case i renewed. Not much chance of that.

I LOVE IT!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
i've had a few drop calls, friends say they hear beeping on their side but as far as i am concern It, doesn't bother me. if it bothers others *** don't call me because I am saving a pretty penny from it's use. . it is no different to me than the cable or phone companies who are using the same technology that i've dealt with. in which my bill got higher and higher every year. the bigger companies can afford to pay for everything, but are they saving you money? I use to give ATT 200.00 a month until i found out i could just get internet service, and have a phone at nocost. i pay 45.00 a month for cable internet and free tv. through the roku smart tv. If any one can top that let me know. read the fine print, keep your boxes because that s how you get the information to send the product back to the company, and they have to fix it. the address is on the box. i ve called tech. service and never had a bad experience the techs always solved my problems. but i guess i may be the only one out here in the world, that this happens to.

I have never had an issue with Magic Jack. The biggest issue is with my cable and a slow signal causing distortion in th evoice quality.

Guest

I had the same issue with beeping on the other end that I didn't hear. I called tech support and was directed to unplug phone from computer and the power outlet then plug back in and it would correct it. It worked great and have not had any problems since.

Love my MJ service!!

Worst Company Ever

Today Magic Jack called my number trying to sell me on this Magic Jack CRAP. I am on both the National and Texas Do Not Call Lists. Several calls to Magic Jack to have my number removed (10+ times) only resulted in several excuses and no resolve of the issue. 1. We do not have any supervisors that work at this company. 2. They hang up. 3.The company that called was not from Magic Jack but from some other company trying to make sales for Magic Jack. 4. The only way to have a complaint addressed is to email upper management because there is not any corporate office at misrepresentation@***.com. Obviously Magic Jack does not care about people or breaking laws. They are apparently liars and crooks and more importantly COWARDS. I have filed the complaint at the above address so they can get in touch with me at anytime plus Olivia has my information but they won't because they have a CROOK mentality. I am going to post this everywhere I can. If this is how they treat non-customers any new customers are going to get screwed. If you find a good review it will be from someone at the company trying to raise their feedback rating.

Horrible experience

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I purchased 2. One in store and one online when I got home for my daughter. The one from the store was horrible and the one online that I had 100 invested it never came. They swore I'd used the one that came in the mail. I swore I didn't. This went on for months. They refused a refund for months. I believe it was delivered to the wrong house and the neighbor girl got it and was using it. When she told me she had one and it was free, I told her no and I'd paid 100 for one that never came. Her boyfriend then smashed hers. I believe because he knew she had mine. I think she must have called about a replacement because I called them back and they immediately gave me a refund without the months of harassment and ugliness I'd experienced. Virtually impossible to talk to someone and wasted hours and hours of my life in this experience. The talk quality was horrible and they kept wanting me to open my computer up so it was left vulnerable.

Had a great exprience with Magic Jack

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

IP phones are different from old POTS phones, something that many don't realize. I use IP phones for work (expensive per month) and Magic Jack for home (inexpensive). BOTH require some extra care and feeding compared to regular POTS phones.

I have now had Magic Jack for several years, and have had a great experience.

REQUIRED:

GREAT internet connection that is STABLE. GREAT router (I connect direct to my router).

If you don't have BOTH of those your Magic Jack will NOT work well. Magic Jack in particular seems to be more sensitive to Router issues than some other IP phones (though it has done much much better than an 8x8 set up that we were using for a business lines at my house so I could be on the office phone system when at home via the same modem and router). If you have a cheap or older router ... don't count on Magic Jack to work well, or at all.

Issues that some have that I don't:

I have two Magic Jack plus's ... those seem to have the least amount of problems compared to their newer units per the reports. I have NOT updated the software in them!! It is stable, automatically reboots if power or internet connection is lost, gives good voice and fax quality, WHY MESS WITH SUCCESS?!

Problems others have that I have NOT:

HEAT or an UNSTABLE POWER source is a killer of any microprocessor, which is what the Magic Jack unit is, a mini computer. I keep my unit out where it gets plenty of air movement, and I keep the transformer as far away from the unit as I can. Long phone calls can cause the unit to heat up thus it needs LOTS of cooling space around it.

The transformer unit is underpowered (or sometimes bad). Just get a 2 amp or larger GOOD QUALITY USB power transformer from a reputable supplier and connect to that the Magic Jack unit vs the 1 amp supplied unit.

50 call per day limit!! (many people don't know this) Run over that and you violate your terms of service and will be terminated!

Some exchanges (few but they exist), many 800 numbers, and almost all Call In Conference Call Center numbers are in exchanges where the place where the call terminates is allowed to CHARGE the originating phone company a per minute charge for the call! This is an FCC tariff issue that Magic Jack can't control, dates back to the 1930's, and has never been changed by the FCC (that is why those places are where MOST Conference Call set ups are physically connected - reduced or no cost for the conference call company since the local phone company is making money on the transfer fees for EVERY conference call attendee that calls in, or 800 customer that calls in). Magic Jack doesn't charge enough for their regular service to pay out those fees ... which is why I imagine they have to pass those costs onto the customer.

(you need to fund your drawing account with Magic Jack to call into those Conference Calls that are terminating in those exchanges - which is most Conference Calls unfortunately - so Magic Jack can turn around and PAY OUT what the other phone company charges them) (911 fees work the same - it is an additional cost to Magic Jack that varies GREATLY per location. Locally we have no 911 fees so Magic Jack doesn't charge me for 911 service).

Do NOT transfer your old number to Magic Jack until you have it up and running, and it is stable!!

I set up my last Magic Jack line just so I could port over my 25 year ATT number, but I let it be up and running for about 3 weeks with no problems before I even thought about ordering up the Port of the old number. The port then went very smoothly. HASTE creates problems here since you may find that your Magic Jack doesn't work right (usually a internet provider issue or router/modem issue - some of which you will never be able to control or fix), so you want to test out your new Magic Jack connection for at least three weeks imo BEFORE you get caught up in Porting and then Re-Porting.

I think Magic Jack is a fabulous device ... for the right situation (great STABLE internet connection, good router, STABLE non fluctuating electrical supply. It is NOT going to work everywhere for everybody. It's 50/day call limitations may also restrict it's usage for some.

OH ... and for me my FAX works perfectly with Magic Jack, both in and out. Also love the voice mail to e-mail option, which I do in addition to having turned on the message light option so my hard wired phones flash at me where there is a message (just like my old ATT service did).

Some services provide more options, including better customer service, but you pay for that. A LOT MORE for that.

Our current office IP system costs me $40/line/mo (we have a number of lines) and it does NOT include FAX ability without expense add ons. Great customer service, but for a business we need instantaneous response if something goes down, so we are willing to pay the freight $$ to get it. My Magic Jack service on the other hand costs me $50/YEAR for the TWO lines I have on Magic Jack! (I prepaid for an extra 5 years for $100 + pay $10/yr for the one ported number so $30/yr for one line and $20/yr for the other line).

Not for everyone ... GREAT for me ... but most of the bad reviews would disappear if people followed the above advice and understood the above issues.

Shaira: Hi, my name is Shaira. How may I help you? Shaira: Hello, how may I help you? W: I just re-uped my moms account.. When I call her I get message that mj customer is not available.. Would you please reset her mj plus device.Shaira: I am looking into this. It may take a while. Please bear with me. W: Ok Shaira: thank you Shaira: thank you for waiting Shaira: now please tell your mom that they must unplug and replug your magicjack W: She is in her 90's and doen't know anything about this stuff. I will try to call her now to see if it is working.. W: No luck. Can't you reset from there? Shaira: that is the only thing they must do they must unplug and replug the magicjack W: Well, I'll have to go to her house to do that. A person shouldn't have to unplug a device upon re-upping account. That isn't very customer friendly or efficient. Shaira: yes to take effect the changes you need to unplug and replug the magicjack Shaira: you can ask for someone who can unplug and replug the magicjack W: You all need to do something that fixes that. A customer shouldn't have to do anything once the re-up is done. There isn't anyone else to help her. W: Why does the mj have to unplugged/rep lugged to make it work? Shaira: that is the only thing to do is to unplug and replug the magicjack Shaira: as simple as that Shaira: so that it will take effect the changes that you made W: She doesn't even know what it looks like. She is very old. I set the thing up initially. Why does it need to be unplugged/re-plugged anyway? Communication with the Oracle Service Cloud Chat service has been lost. Please wait while attempts are made to restore the connection. Disconnection in 720 seconds. Connection resumed. Shaira: One moment please... W: Why does the device need to be unplugged and then re-plugged? Shaira: to take effect the changes W: You should be able to effect the changes what ever they are. I didn't make any changes anyway. Shaira: I believe that I have already provided you all the information needed; I would like to ask permission to end this conversation with you. Thank you. Shaira has disconnected. Sounds like you it just needs to be unplugged and plugged back in. Pretty simple.

She repeated that MANY times.

What else did you expect her to do? Someone at a call center can't change how the hardware works while they are on the phone with you.

Poor Service and Problem Resolution

I have had a Magic Jack Phone for years. It was time to renew, and I went online to renew my service. Payment went through and then a screen popped up the said my payment was applied to an old Magic Jack device and the current one is going to expire in the next 24 hours. I go to an online chat and request that the payment be applied to the current device. Nope, they can't do. They want me to pay another fee to renew the newer device. They will refund the payment applied to the wrong device, but don't know when the funds can be expected to show up in my account. Can they extend my service for a short time until the funds are returned? Nope, they won't do that...even though they give other people a fee 30 days to try it out. So I can pay them twice, and hope they return the first payment to me or, allow my phone to go dead until the payment is returned, then renew the correct device. I am very dissatisfied with their customer service!
